Dental Hygiene Program Mission Statement:

The Dental Hygiene Program at Yorkville College graduates knowledgeable, competent and dedicated oral health professionals who adhere to the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics established by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario and the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association. Our graduates will function within their scope of practice, in a collaborative manner, with the client, community and other health care providers focusing on human needs and oral hygiene as an integral part of systemic health.

Program Duration:

18 month program 8:00 am - 4:30 pm daily (daily scheduled hours may fluctuate depending on the course, hours will be given at the start of the course terms).Total Program Hours: 2136 (off-site placement will extend these program hours).

Admission/ Academic Requirements:

1. OSSD or equivalent or a mature student status, including:

  • Grade 12 English
  • Grade 12 Math
  • Grade 12 Biology or Chemistry

2. Entrance Examination (Math, Science and English component)
3. Interview prior to admission into the program
4.Biographical Sketch (Essay)
An applicant offered admission to Yorkville College's Dental Hygiene Program shall be required to meet other requirements such as submission of an immunization review form consisting of information on the applicant's:

  • Rubella, Rubeola, & Varicella Titres
  • Tetanus / Diphtheria, Polio, & MMR Immunization Status
  • TB/Mantoux Test
  • Hepatitis A & B Immunization
  • Influenza Immunization

Applicants will also be required to obtain a Criminal Record Check and CPR "C"certification prior to entrance into the clinical and community placement portions of the program (a CPR "C" course is offered at Yorkville College to help the student acquire this certification). All costs associated with CPR/First Aid, Criminal Records Check and completion of the Immunization Review Form are the responsibility of the student.

Application Procedures:

Students should submit official copies of all transcripts, including high school and all other academic records as well as complete Security Check. Tours of the College are available at any time. Appointments for entrance examinations can be made at (416) 929-0121 to reserve your spot.

Graduation Requirements:

Students must achieve an overall average of 75% in all academic classes and an average of 80% in all clinical skills or procedures.

Program Overview :

The Dental Hygiene program at Yorkville College ensures that our students upon graduation will be prepared to perform dental hygiene services as part of a select member of this regulated profession. The students of this program will learn to apply the dental hygiene process of care model, comprising of: assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. Included in the program are real-life clinical experiences to complement the academic theoretical portion of the program.

Yorkville College will ensure that our educational program in Dental Hygiene produces practitioners that meet all of the current practice trends and standards set out by the Commission on Dental Accreditation Canada, the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association and Ontario's Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. An important part of this program is practicing ethics and jurisprudence, and for the student to become familiar with the regulating bodies, the licensing agencies, dental products, and dental techniques.

Yorkville College will deploy teaching methodologies and evaluation techniques enhancing the knowledge, skills and ethical values of our student and graduate populations. These are distributed within the four major components of the dental hygiene curriculum, namely: Biomedical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, and Dental Hygiene Theory and Practice.

Registered dental hygienists may pursue careers in private, public and community practices, institutions and education. They may work independently, interdependently and collaboratively with other health care professionals in a variety of practice settings and environments. They are educated to work directly with clients, using a problem-solving structure to treat and prevent tooth decay and gum infections and diseases. This is done through services such as periodontal debridement. They are trained to: assess clients tooth and gum health, plan and implement treatment, and evaluate the outcome.
